I sometimes use my Sekonic L-358 but I find that it's only useful if you really have in mind the exact lighting conditions of every part of the composition. For straight-up portrait shots, it's much faster to just test your lights, check your camera's LCD, then adjust accordingly, unless you absolutely need to shoot at a certain aperture or shutter speed.
