Light painting

Can anyone give some tips on light painting? The scenario I have in mind would be lighting a car using a softbox on a stick and walking along the car. I'm not talking about a "drawing a smiley face with a laser pointer" type of thing. I have also seen people paint landscapes with a flashlight and a long exposure, but I am unsure of what ideal exposure settings / light quantities would be.
