lighting issues

Hello .....a newbie here

I didn't use my tripod for this (just a solid surface) , but mainly I was testing the lighting. I just need some input on lighting so I can really get more detail. Seems alot of my close ups are off on the light? Need some input. Thanks in advance.

Looks kind of over-exposed on the diamond. Try using spot metering to make sure that the camera isn't metering for the leather around the ring.

Also try to diffuse the light with some tissue paper. The lighting looks too harsh, could also be the metering.

try a light tent...or make one yourself.....will diffuse the light better
