Lighting Question

I'm looking to get some kind of off-camera lighting to do the band promo pictures I've been talking about... I've heard a lot of good things about alien bees, and I like diffused light (umbrellas, etc.). What do you all think a good beginning light set-up would be? I'd like to keep it under $800 USD preferably... Thanks!

Is that a good starting place? It's very cheap... I don't mind going for something a little more expensive (like alien bees). I just want to make sure I get the right stuff...
