Lighting setup

I have 3 white lightning ultra strobe lights, synced to my Canon flash.

I came across this tutorial and I want to try something similar - I know he's trying to emulate a certain style of the photographer but that's not what I'm interested in. I like his fourth attempt and would love to catch that on an 85mm. Is there anyway to get that look without all the complicated v-flats? It's a little unsightly for the other person to have soeone shooting them out of tiny hole cut out of the v-flat.
