I am setting up my photoblog, and I always like to set any links to open in a new window, as that I how I prefer things to happen myself when browsing. If I'm reading a page and want to see what the link they posted is about, I will click it, and want a new window, that way I can see it and yet still keep reading the page I was on. It's not like you only click a link once you're done with the page. Otherwise you have to use the back button a lot and I personally just don't like doing that.

So I was reading some info at WordPress as that is what I am using now, and they mentioned not using target=_blank, it said "this setting is regarded as unfriendly to your readers and not recommend". I was surprised to read that. So I am curious how other people feel about this!

People are generally unfriendly to pop ups because there is usually an advertisment or porno program attached to it. Some people setup their internet so you can't viewew pop ups. I know this is not what your planning on doing, but its hard for their software to determine what is a pop up ad and what is a legitemate new window in their browser.

I to like to open pages in new windows when i look at websites, it is OK to set your up to do that. However, if you do then some people won't be able to properly view your site, without modifying there browser settings first.

I also prefer links to open in new windows - even with having to set things up so they won't be blocked.

There are two issues when dealing with opening a new window really. First you take control of the process out of the hands of the user. It is not a really big deal for me, since I use Firefox but still. Second, if I remember right it is not complinant to current web standards, and the coders of wordpress are big on standard compliant web design. That is why there are only tables for the calendar input in the design. The rest is magical css.

Glad to see another wordpress user though.

I actually prefer it when that happens because then I don't lose the original page. I know you can go back but if you are opening a bunch of links then it makes it easier.

If I want a link to open in a new window, I will click on the link while holding the shift button. If I want it to open in a new tab *mozilla firefox* I will hold down alt and shift while I click on the link. I really like the way that firefox handles popups, as in doesnt permit them. :0). Unless I let that site to do them.

The main thing that annoys me is links that popup using javascript. I cant use the shift feature then. and alot of times they dont put the entire url in the javascript thing so I cant copy the url to open in a window manually if it doesnt work right. Hotmail likes thier javascript, grr.

So I htink links should open in thier own frame, if the person wants it to open in a new window, let them use the shift key. :0).
