Looking for C&C (pet rats)

I am currently the owner of two rats. They are VERY photogenic and seem to love posing for the camera. Hoping to get some advice on how to improve my photos.

ETA: all pictures taken with Canon Rebel XS and kit lense.

They are cute, but the focus is rather soft. All I can focus on is the whiskers. Can you get more DOF? Play around and see if you can get the whole body in focus.
