As for the lighthouse...don't shoot tall structures with objects in the foreground obstructing their stature. It looks like a midget lighthouse. That goes for other tall buildings as well such as skyscrapers, chapel towers, etc.

The white balance feels off in the color ones, particularly the door, so I go black and white for both.

Actually, it is a short lighthouse, that's not a distortion.

Thanks for the input guys. As for the white balance on the door picture, I did adjust the color a little bit. I thought it looked more grim, which is what I'm going for.

Well it makes it look even shorter.

In the colour version of the lighthouse, you can totally see the handshake. Very blurry. That being said, MaxBloom is right. The way you shot the lighthouse isn't eyecatching or compositionally sound at all.
