I want to start saving up for a new lens for my Nikon D3100. Right now I own the 18-55mm kit lens, the 50mm f/1.8 (which I LOVE), and a 50-200mm zoom. I want a good either portrait, or all around lens that won't leave me broke. Any suggestions?

A good all around lens ?

You covered 18-200mm with your 2 zoom lens and got the nifty fifty for portrait or low light.
I think you covered most of basic needs.
Unless you need something more specific I think you don't really need another good lens to cover same range.

Personally I would save the money to get a better camera like the D7100 or the D7000.

What is it in your current lens lineup that you find you're lacking?

I loved my 35mm 1.8 on my D3000. That thing hardly ever left my camera. I got way more use out of it than my 50 (til I upgraded bodies).

My thoughts:

-Ditch the 18-55 & 55-200 for a 18-200mm. I did his and love it.

-85mm 1.8 (good for portraits/1.4 if ou got the extra coin)

-17-55mm 2.8

The lenses that you now have will cover most photographic situations. What they won't is 1) extreme wide angle 11-16mm, 2) low light telephoto (70-200 f/2.8) and extreme close up (macro). So, unless you find yourself in situations where your present equipment just won't accommodate your needs, I see no need to purchase any more lenses at this time.

I invested NZ260.00 on a used (mint) Nikkor 18-105 3.5/5.6 dx lens and it lives on my camera. It is wide enough for most of my scenery work and long enough for a portrait lens.
Would suit the D3100 completely.
There are a truckload of them on Ebay.
