Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
Hello all,

I've attempted to look up the possible issue that I am having with my Lightroom 3 but I am having no luck. Anyway, after I switched to full frame (D700) it appears that my photos look brighter and over-exposed after being uploaded to lightroom; yet it looks fine on the camera beforehand. I'm sure this is just my lack of knowledge on settings, but I'm unsure if this is something to adjust in lightroom or my camera. Anyone else experience this? I didn't have this problem using my dx body.

The colorspace might have something to do with it... but more likely it is your LCD display on your camera. It is not really a good visual indicator for exposure... use your histogram.

You may also need to calibrate your monitor... if you have never done that, it is probably set way too bright and contrasty. ColorWiki - Monitor Calibration FAQ

Thanks, I definitely need to invest in calibration software. For the most part I use and check my histogram but after a quick search on D700 histograms it seems that others experience this problem while shooting in raw.

The way lightroom and your camera see RAW photos are different. Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc each have their own special touch to their RAW files. When LR3 or LR4 recive them they are different since adobe doesn't have those presets installed in the LR software.

Use Nikons software to import photos then transfer them to LR

Thanks for the advice. Are you referring to Nikon's NX2 software? It seems like a lot of people use this software.

Also keep in mind that Lightroom will show you an 'unaltered' RAW image preview, whereas what you see on your camera LCD is a processed JPG, so contrast, saturation etc may be different.

Most digital cameras cannot show a Raw file or it's histogram on the rear LCD, because Raw conversion cannot be done in the camera.

What the camera shows is a Basic size JPEG thumbnail that is embedded in the Raw file. The histogram the camera shows is also from that Basic size JPEG thumbnail.

Next, if you open your D700 Raw files in NX2 and Lightroom (or some other Raw converter) they will look different because each application uses it's own unique, but similar, algorithms to render the image.

LR3 or LR4 will show a washed out image when imported and it's up to you to make the appropriate adjustments to the RAW file to get it to look like you want it to look. Also, see KmH's post above.

Yes as the results are consistent ..... also you can put your original raw photos in a folder where you want them.

Thanks everyone, it all makes more sense now. I'll go ahead and give NX2 a try and see how my images turn out. From now on I'll experiment with exposure compensation to see if it helps with the over exposure.

OP, where do you live in MD? I'm in Montgomery County.

I'm in Prince Georges County in Hyattsville- minutes from Takoma Park and Silver Spring. I cross state lines frequently so I'm usually all over the place.
