Mamiya C330 Paramender

Should the ratchet action of a Mamiya Paramender allow the camera to be held at any position along it's upward travel or just at the top? I’ve just bought one from ebay and the ratchet action will only hold if the camera is moved all the way to the top of travel, just want to make sure of the way it should work. Thanks in advance to anyone that answers!

I used a nice complete C330 outfit back in 1983 complete with a parameter and 3 lenses. My old boss was anxious to sell it to me, but I was more interested in photojournalism and being 20 some years old, I was more into my Nikon outfit than into medium format.It is my recollection that the ratchet only locks at the top position.
