If it will make you feel any better, the focusing screens fifty years ago made manual focusing a snap. I don't know about the pro cameras but the screens on consumer bodies today pretty much mandate autofocus.

Split screens make life so much easier.

Maybe it's me being naive but I've never seen the purpose of manual-focus unless you're in one of those rare situations where the camera is unable to auto-focus for you.

If someone wants to enlighten me, please feel free.

Are they really so rare?

Low light? Macro? Landscape? Selective focus?

I could see it for Macro but for the others I'm able to set the focus by pushing the shutter release 1/2 way down and then recomposing.

low light wildlife won't give you the time of day to recompose ;)

going out of subject??

How about trying to get your lens to automatically hyper-focus?

;)

sorry pompelmo - to be honest I think the answer is to practice more.
Out of interest though have you tested your viewfinder to make sure that it is set to the correct focus - othewise it could be that each time you are seeing a sharp shot in the viewfinder it is infact not in foucs?
I think it should talk about this in your user manual - look in the index under viewfinder and see if you can find it (don;t know nikons) but there is proable a little dial to one side of your viewfinder

I'm not sure if all cameras have autofocus motors.

Ever try to focus on something behind a fence? Or dirty glass? Not that those are optimal situations for most photography, but sometimes it happens. Street shooting is harder with auto-focus. Walking people don't wait for you to focus and recompose.

Personally, I don't even bother to manual focus with my D70 because the viewfinder is so small and dim, which is probably one reason I use my old film cameras more these days.
