Meager attempt at moon shot for C&C, please

You will probably get better detail at F8! You have plenty of DOF at F5.6... but your lens is not as sharp there as it will be at F8 to F11. Tripod highly recommended. It still looks a bit bright!

this was shot 400mm.... 1/80, F8, ISO 100.

did you use flash?

No.. but there was an extremely large ambient light source relatively near camera right, and behind (although the light source is very small compared to some others that are out there!)

don't mean to be stalking your posts... is there a certain time of day when it's best to take these images?

When the Moon is out? lol! Seriously though.. anytime the moon is above the horizon! When it is low, you can get some spectacular effects as the light will typically be different than it will be when the moon is higher! Sometimes when it is low, you also get an interesting distance compression effect .. I am sure you have seen it! When the MOON looks absolutely HUGE? Atmospheric dust, pollution, etc.. can put color in it that is wonderful!

I am not that big of a moon buff.. so can't answer in detail, but there are those here that can. Maybe they will chime in!

Typically you will get much better detail (as mentioned above) if you can get the moon sidelighted a bit... so that it really throws some shadows in the craters and on the mountains! Full moon is too "flat"!
