Metering Modes?

What is the best metering mode setting on my Canon 400D SLR? I am currently using Partial metering.

all of them does different things.. nothing is best. But if you are new, i suggest using evaluative metering.

I center spot meter when my subject is back lit to good results and set my meter lock on the subject and then compose

You arent new then.. LOL Most new photogs dont even know how to meter lock

One of the draw back is the Canon XTi (400D) lack of spot meter unless a custom (non-Canon) firmware is installed.

I like spot meter.
