metz 54MZ-4 or canon 550ex?

i recently switched from Nikon film to canon digital. i have a 20D and a digital rebel (black version) as a back up. i bought a 420ex and am really disapointed with it. the expsure was often a little bit off on both cameras. id like something a little more powerful and a little more sturdy, also i thought the controles on the 420ex were horrible. i already sold the 420ex and am trying to decide between a 550ex and a metz 54MZ-4 with a canon foot. iv heard that e-ttl isnt all that great which makes me think i should go with the metz sincei could use it in e-ttl for outdoor fill and on auto(in the flash) for main light source indoors and what not. what do you think?
