This Great Gray Owl surprised me in an area I frequent often, but had never seen an owl. It posed nicely for me as the sun set, even turning around on its perch for me to take this shot.

Canon 7D body with a Canon 500mm f/4 lens on a beanbag. ISO 800 with an exposure of 1/400 @ f/6.3 with an exposure bias of -1/3.

I was just reading about GGOwls yesterday.

What a fantastic shot. What a cool looking owl.
 
Not sure what the moon was up to around the time you took this picture, but I've seen them out more in the daylight around the new moon.

My theory is since it's darker at night they are less able to hunt and come out more in the daytime ...
 
Oh wow! This is an incredible shot! Makes me really envious of that 500mm! :lol:
