I call this the mother of all hornets. It was crawling around on a bush in my front yard. I was not flying around, and was quite docile. Here are a few of the shots I took of it, one on my gloved hand.

3. There was a second hornet that flew in and landed on the larger hornet on my sidewalk. Here it is flying in.

Wow - great images. Not sure how you got them to be so docile for so long, but definitely not something I would be pursuing - wicked set of "jaws" - don't know what the proper name is for those, but I would not want to be on the receiving end.

Wow, awesome pictures! With all of the detail, they look like something straight off a spaceship!

I have been trying to capture a dragon fly for the past several days, now I am determined!

I like 1 a lot, but the noise bugs me, take out the noise man. lol

I really like the upclose of the face.

...also, on pic 7, I wonder if you can burn the right antennae and make it black to match the left.

Some very good shots! We have those big ones here also but have never seen one act like it wanted to sting anything, One or two follow me around the yard while I'm mowing. My yard is full of holes where they make nests.
