YorkshireMoorsHDR.jpg

I think I'm missing something in Photomatix with this one.

For me it is not the processing, it is fine. Nothing exciting for my eye to discover, except the sky. Have you tried cropping some from the foreground?

For whoever knows the North York Moores, this is what they look like. There is not too much more to be seen, so I feel the photo gives quite an accurate account of what that part of Yorkshire looks like (assuming this was taken there, but it need not be the North York Moores, there are other parts of moor land, too!).
You were there last year in August? (The heather is in bloom).

You definitely are missing something in this one how many exposures where taken the image doesn’t stand out as much and appears like a standard flat image shot to be honest.
Not discrediting your efforts but we have to be honest at times. It is not a bad image at all I like it but not as an HDR but more or less as a landscape photograph.

As an HDR exercise, there probably wasn't much for Photomatix to do. I suspect you pickup up the details in the distant hills, but other than that, the range isn't that wide and the edges are soft. It would be interesting to see the 0EV photo for comparison.

Compositionally, shots like this suffer from the light foreground. Whenever you've got light objects in the foreground and dark objects in the distance, the scene looks flat. I think you probably had to choose between a 'near-far' composition that moved the horizon up (and emphasized something in the foreground), or a 'big sky' composition that moved the horizon down (and emphasized the sky). The intermediate composition, while an accurate portrayal of the scene, isn't as interesting.

LaFoto, this is early September, it was fantastic. This photo doesn't really do justice.

Provo, this is three shots hand held and I completely agree, it's really lacking from a HDR perspective.

Syco, I'll find the originals.

Feel free to go at it, I have the RAWs if you really want to go nuts.

Judging from the middle, 0EV image, I'd say that the dynamic range wasn't that wide to begin with, so there wasn't much for Photomatix to do. Unless you were going for some kind of 'painterly' effect, it is what it is. I pulled the tonemapped image down and played around with it in Photoshop. There are levels and curves adjustment that can be done, as well as some localized dodging and burning to create a little depth. But I wasn't able to come up with anything worthy of a repost. Maybe somebody else can.
