Moving from jpeg to raw!

Ive noticed when I open my raw images in camera raw 4.2, it say's 8bit at the bottom of the screen. How do I make sure im shooting in the highest raw format? I could go to that box and change it to 16bit but does that help since the photo is already taken?

the RAW is in 16bit to start with. The bit rate on the bottom of the menu - like all the other options in RAW editing - is never saved to the RAW file (instead it is saved to a separate profile file which is mearly loaded up each time you open the RAW - allowing you to preserve the settings without altering the RAW in any way).

I have mine set to 8bit only as I am limited in what I can edit in PS elements

o ok so when I open it up in elements I have the option of which bit rate I wish to use. So if I have elements 6 I should just leave it 8 bit?

The two best things about converting to RAW: (1) I can go back and redo images that I didn't know how to process decently at the time. They haven't been degraded. (2) It got me over the notion that there was such a thing as an unprocessed photo.
