Photos NOT OK to edit
I am Brand New to this. My current camera is a:

Cannon PowerShot S5 IS
8.0 Megapixel
12x Zoom Lens
6.0-72.0 mm

I know this camera is good enough for a beginner and I can certainly read the manual, but what might be some pointers to learn about the camera first?

Aperture?
Auto vs. Portrait?

Just looking for the best place to start learning.

thanks.

Yes, I know to aim at the subject when shooting. lol.

Step #1. Push that damned pop-up down and keep it down.

haha. that much I've learned already, but is it better to use no flash at all?
I dont have a hot shoe flash yet.

That pop-up has its uses ...

Put a diffuser in front of it for fill light when shooting macro of bugs and it can be nice. :)

Try to stay away from the auto mode if it has av and tv and m. Play around with the settings and see how they change the photo. Do you have a tripod?

I own that camera, and really enjoy it.
It will take some good photos, and the Super Macro is a really nice feature. It will do things with the built in lens, that people with SLR's will have to spend $$$ to recreate (albeit better results are possible with that $$$).
The digital focus can be a pain to nail in Macro shooting, but you will get used to it eventually. Just take lots of shots
I generally shoot in Av or M.

Also, the video on it is amazing, especially with the stereo sound capability, silent zoom, dedicated video button, and snapshot quality while recording video.
