pic 4 & 5-

- the next two started a healthy discussion between my bf and i. He likes the first because its off center and a rule of thirds- I like the second because its a little brighter and centered. which is the better pic? how could we have made both of them better?

Could you from now on (and perhaps repost these) post only the actual pictures? Links are hard to follow and maybe people will not. Just hit 'insert image' and paste in the url and the picture will appear. Thanks.

as you can see the insert image = x box. that is not the original picture i promise:sexywink:

if you know how to do this, please let me know, Thanks

If you want to capture the water as if it's frozen hanging in the air, you would need to use a faster shutter speed which could be difficult shooting in the shade. I would suggest practicing with a cup of water in the sunshine.

As for three, leave the shutter open a bit longer. You'll need a tripod for this. If you don't already have one, you should pick one up, it's worth having one anyway especially if you plan to keep taking photographs.

Welcome to the forum.

If you want more in-depth C&C, try to put fewer images into a thread...one or two.

thanks guys,
i wanted to use fewer pictures by creating multiple threads... but the bf suggested to go ahead with the 8. bf knows best....NOT!

I do have a tripod, but i didn't think to bring it with me on the walk. Now i know better! thanks.

I like how you were able to get close up on the pine cone and get the background blur. I'm a newbie as well and haven't been able to acheive that look at 55mm like you have.

The snow in the first two is overexposed, if you could find an angle where everything is about the same light, it will turn out better.

On the pine cone, I like the first one for its positioning, but the second for its brightness and clarity.

I like # seven, but it could be straightened.

Last one's pretty good. Maybe change the positioning a little and brighten it.

thanks:)
i will remember the lighting - so not to have the snow so over exposed.

the pine cone blur effect - i think it was a combination of aperature and how close i was able to focus on the cone- but i am sure that their are many others that can tell both of us how to do it properly every time

as for the third pic i have taken it into lightroom and fixed it a lot, but i think that the one i have posted is still my favorite

I was just looking at what settings you used. On the first two, I would have a lower aperture and ISO. 800 is a little extreme, I think.

HannahRebekeah, I am the above mentioned BF. the ISO 800 was left over settings from the previous shoot. we are both still working on looking at all of the settings before we start shooting. We also don’t really know how to pick an ok ISO and are still learning.

as far as picking a lower aperture, do you mean f/11 as opposed to f/25 (i don’t think we can do f/25 but I haven’t looked to know). what affect would this have had on the picture? we are still trying to learn, and not really sure what affects aperture really has on things.

Basically, the higher the aperture, the more things there are in focus, but it lets less light in, so it will be darker. I typically keep mine as low as possible, but 8 or 11 is fine. As for ISO, the higher it is, the brighter, but also grainier it will be. Because of that, then, the lower it is, the darker and less grainy it will be. I hope that helps.
