This is my first attempt at taking a portrait.

I hope not to offend anyone here, but I cannot see an adams apple, and the person has ear ring holes, that mans expression may be a ladies?

Pleasant expression and good use of depth of field. Perhaps consider using the camera vertically, or cropping to a vertical frame to suit the shape of the subject.

Seems kind of flat and low contrast/saturation to me. Good expression & I like the crop, tho.

Play with your contrast and levels a bit, and I think you have a very nice portrait here.
