He has lovely brown eyes. Would have been perfect to see them in focus ... while now the focus is on his eye-brows. I quite like the shallow DOF but maybe one step towards a narrower aperture (is there a technical term for this?) would have helped this?

Working with shallow DOF is tricky. Getting the eyes in focus is so important. I've botched many shots by having the focus just a little off. I'd also crop down on the hat, like an 8:10 ratio. It's not as important as the boy's face, but it's taking up almost half the image. A crop would also move his eye up from the center of the image.
