I just found this magazine that I assume appears only online but all the photographers are amazing:

That's a link to some photographs by a guy named Chris Anthony
The photographs are just so creepy and moody and perfect...and call me crazy but they almost remind me of a video game.

Does anyone have any advice on how I could get similar effects without doing something corny- which I feel is what would happen if I tried to do something like this.

You want to achieve the effect of his photos? Mostly it looks done with incredibly soft light and processing. The subject is then irrelevant to the look, but you need to try and match it to the mood.

I didn't read the article so forgive me if stated his method. But I think you can achieve soemthing similar by firing a flash with a very narrow beam (manually zoomed) at the roof. This will give a large light source, but small enough to create definition.

Then in photoshop compress the dynamic range using the curves tool, and desaturate.
