On my trips, I usually pass through Bangkok, Thailand because that is the least expensive air gateway and the most westernized of the major cities in SEA. I stay over a day or two to rest up from the grueling 20 hour plane trip and to buy anything I've forgotten.
Until this past trip I have always stayed in the same guesthouse because it was away from the backpacker hell, and didn't allow drug use or sex tourism. It was interestingly just a block from the Nana Stop on the Skytrain and from Nana Plaza, one of the major centers for every vice one would want in Thailand.

These pictures were taken within one block of the stairs to the subway, just to give you an idea of what the not-so-nice parts of Bangkok night life can be like.

And a bit further down the street.

It's not much of a surprise why Bangkok can be overwhelming for a naive tourist.

Thanks for those Lew, they brought back memories of Hong Kong in the 70s and 80s (especially the concrete pillow, the street dogs and the blind(?) beggar with sleeping child).
