Need advice on studio lighting

In a couple of weeks i am looking to purchase some studio lighting but im lost as to what to buy! Ive looked at all the interfit range but they seem a lil cheap compared to something like bowens, but really i dont have a clue!! I wanna get flash and not hot lights and im gonna have about £500-£600 to spend, what do you guys think is my best option? Ive had a look at the second hand market and i cant really find very much decent gear. I also wouldnt mind having two soft boxes to use (or are umbrellas better for a first time buy, i really dont know!!)

A lot of people here seem to like Alien Bees. How much space are you going to have in your studio?

Also, what are you shooting? And how many lights are you looking to get? Could you use just one main and spend on bookends, reflectors, flags and so on?
