So, I am finally buying my first digital SLR! Yay.

My budget is $1500. I am between the Canon EOS Rebel XTI http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10079367&logon=&langid=EN

OR the Nikon D80. http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10078581&catid=20222

If anyone has any input that would be great. Please feel free to recommend me cams, just keep in mind my 1500 dollar budget should include a lens kit! I'm an advanced beginner, so something not too complicated to learn would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

If it were me, I'd go with the XT. Simply because I had it and loved it. 8 megapixels made plenty of 20x30 prints too.

XT w/ 18-55 lens - $550: Amazon

Canon 50mm f/1.8 - $80: Amazon

Canon 70-200 f/4 - $587: Amazon

Canon 430EX flash - $244: Amazon

Then you have a great set, with a little to spare for accessories.

Well, both are obviously really good cameras, but have you considered one like the Olympus e510? Its sold for around 1000 USD with a double kit:- 14-42mm and 40-150 mm ZUIKO lenses (35mm equivalence is x2). These are both supposedly very good quality, and being included in the kit, are also well priced.

Im currently actually trying to decide which dslr to buy, and im leaning strongly towards the olympus as my first dsrl. Its compactness, liveview capabilities, IS and effective dust removal systems are strong positive points, although of course your choices- canon rebel XTi and Nikon D80 have different strong points.

Good luck with your decision, go handle the camera and in the end, a bit of stomach feeling is probably the best!

I guess tht is a good idea and (at the risk of starting a forestorm) lets hope that Olympus doesn't just up and decide tho stop making DSLR's as they did with 35mm SLR's in the past. All that aside the best way tomake a decision like this is to go to a store that carries the cameras you like, hold them in your hands and buy the one that feels the best to you because only you can really make the decision of what you like and best thing you have noone to blame if you think you made the wrong one.

These 2 cameras are difficult to compare like for like, the 350d is 2 1/2 years old, the D80 only 1 year old, 1 1/2 years in dslr developement is a lifetime and that is reflected in the comparative cost.
If somone offered me either of these cameras for nothing, which is exactly what YOUR camera will cost ME, theres no contest
Throw a bugdet into the mix and that 350 is great value.
The advice is the D80 is the best camera you can get for your budget by miles, according to your links, but it doesn't leave much for lenses, kit lens only:grumpy:

dunno about Olympus
