I have an SL1 and have owned two wide angles for it. I bought the Canon 10-18mm at Best Buy like 4 days after I bought my first DSLR, and I was happy with it until I saw a tokina 11-16mm F2.8 a few years later... I figured faster lens equals better lens, so I bought it (used, I think $300). After using both for a while I gravitated toward the canon, even though it didn't have as wide an aperture. It weighs less, focuses REALLY fast, focuses silently, and it is shockingly sharp. I never bothered to pixel peep or shoot a chart, so my decision was based on the experience of using the lens and not on tech specs, but the weight and AF performance made the possible technical differences and the wider aperture of the tokina unimportant to me. I sold the tokina and kept the canon. For whatever that tale is worth.
