Hi,

After a suggestion from ceeboy I prepared a list of lens which I am interested in my budget. I would like your suggestions in finalize.
I am owning D5100 and my budget for lens is upto $600 - INR 35000, I am from India.

70-300 vr nikon
55-300 vr Nikon
55-200 vr Nikon
70-300 vc Tamron
18-270 PZD Tamron

Please suggest best for Wildlife and zoom. If you suggest any other lens it would be better enough.

Thanks in advance,
Goutham

That one.

70-300mm VR. On your d5100 it has a reach of 450mm. I got one used for $250 but the average seems to be around $400 used. It's a great lens for me on my D80. Here's one of my favorite shots

1st Choice - 70-300 vr nikon: The Defacto Wildlife Zoom Sharp up to 250mm'ish above a smidgin soft that sharpens up in post fine. For Dx & Fx camera's. Build Excellent and Best Zoom you can buy for under $600.

2nd Choice - 55-300 vr Nikon: About a third lighter and smaller than the 70-300vr. Tho AF is a smidgin slower and build quality less than 1st choice tho does have a Metal mount.

3rd Choice - 55-200 vr Nikon: Not a true wildlife zoom where 300mm is considered the minimum for. But great for a walkabout general lens being lighter, more compact and less obstusive. Tho have done wildlife with it. Just requires being more sneaky and getting closer. But for a lot of wildlife & sports than the 70-300vr would be a better fit.

Definitely the Nikon 70-300 VRII. I used to own that lens (till I sold it help fund the Nikon 70-200 VRII) and it was a great lens for outdoor wildlife!

Nikon 70-300 VR (without fail)
If budget is more of an issue... Nikon 55-300 VR next.....

Thank you all for your suggestions

Try to find a used 18-200 vr2 Nikon. Should be close to your price range.

For wildlife and from that list: 70-300 Nikon. I'd NEVER try and shoot wildlife with anything shorter than a 300, and the 70-300 is superior to the 55-300.

But we are talking about a crop sensor? Doesn't that make the 200 technically a 300? I agree that the longer the better though.

Nikon's 70-300 AFS VR G IF ED is an excellent lens for the price - we have two of them and even use it on the D800....
