So I've had my trusty D50 since launch and I've loved it. It does most of everything I want.

However, its reaching 50k clicks and it's starting to show it's age.

I am considering either a used D90 or used D7000.

Obviously the D7000 is a better piece of kit, but I'm not entirely sure I'd notice the difference between it and a D90. The used marked has them about $200 in price difference. SO here is the big question. What would you do? D90 and maybe a new lens? Or D7000 and stick with my current glass ( 18-70, 50/1.8, 18-200VRII).

Not 100% with the Nikon bodies, but I would be more tempted to go with the 7000 of those two but I'd really personally go with the 7100 myself.

The 7100 is a bit out of reach, price wise, for the moment (and for the future).

D7000 for sure, my philosophy is always try to get the most modern camera you can put your hands on.
You can also consider looking at the D5200, while its placed below the D7000 it is more modern and an awesome tool, yes you are giving up some options but gaining a lot too and the D5200 cost about the same as the D7000.
Either way I wouldnt get the D90.

Here is a fun review comparing the D7100 vs the D5200.
While its not the D7000 I think it will give you the general idea and maybe consider the D5200

Hi seedubxj - the D50 was my first DSLR as well. A great camera for its day, but its day is past. Today, I would say the same about the D90.

The D7000's higher resolution, improved low light performance and speed over the D90 make the extra money worth it, in my view.

In addition, any D7000 you buy will probably have a couple of years' fewer shutter actuations than a comparable D90, and last you that much longer.

Don't know what your budget is, but you can get a refurbished D7000 with a 90 day Nikon warranty from a reputable dealer on eBay for $646.

If you prefer to shop through Amazon, a Nikon factory refurbished unit with the same warranty is $678.

Hope that's helpful - and good luck with your decision!

I have the d90 and love it.... However, the prices between the two are pretty close.... I'd just get the d7000.

The better Multi-CAM 4800DX, 39 auto focus point (9 cross type) auto focus module in the D7000 is worth $200 more than the Multi-CAM 1000DX, 11 auto focus point (1 cross type) auto focus module in the D90.

The D7000 has 100% viewfinder coverage. The D90 only has 96% viewfinder coverage.

The D7000 has magnesium alloy top and back plates. The D90 is all plastic.

The D90 was the first DSLR able to also shoot video, so it's video capability is kind of rudimentary. The video capability of the D7000 is significantly more advanced.

In your shoes, I would get a D7000.

Do you want to buy my D90? It hasn't received much use since I got the D700! Really though, if you can, get the D7000. It's greatly improved over the D90:
- Better low-light capabilities thanks to the newer sensor.
- Dual card slots.
- 39-point AF instead of 11.
- Better weather Sealing.
- 100% viewfinder.

It's overall a MUCH better camera then the D90 and would be well worth the little difference in price.

I ended up with a new-to-me D7000 with less than 3,000 click. Loving it so far. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Now to save for a fast 17-55 or 28-70.
