I am new to photography, have always had a passion and recently started persueing it with natural lighting . Have a large studio with 14ft ceiling and one small window . Would like to start taking newborn and children full body and close up portraits. Confused on the lighting equipment needed , have a canon 7d, backdrop, and stand . Been looking at alien bee 800 , and photoflex octodome. So many choices what studio lighting do i actually need . Budget $ 1000 for now. One light or two .

Time for research. Head down to your local library and borrow all the books they have on portraiture, studio lighting, etc. Doesn't matter if the books are old, the theory and techniques haven't changed. $1000 is an awfully tight budget to set up a proper studio.

Three monolights, stands, triggers, meter, modifiers and backdrops of sufficient quality to last you for a reasonable amount of time are likely to be closer to the $4000 range.
