Just starting out.. i just bought a canon rebel T2i. so far i am enjoying it ..
to get people opinions. if you could only buy 1 lens what would it be.. leaning toward 17-40 L lens..

let me know your thoughts.

Hey, Don't be sad. Starting out is fun too. The "one" lens is a personal choice. I like a zoom that is at least in the 18-55 range (a longer length than 55 would be helpful for portraits). I've learned that an aperture that goes as wide open as f/2.8 is an awesome lens. It is useful in low light and it creates a shallow depth of field when wanted (to emphasize the focused subject).
