new to nikon need help....

What is the ISO range do you usually use? Don't be afraid to crank it up. I have seen photos taken with D7000 at 3200-6400 and it looks just fine just make sure to keep it a little over exposed (0.3-1) in order to reduce the visible noise.

Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 is indeed a very sharp and well built lens. I won't even try to compare it with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, however, I have heard many positive feedback from other Tamron owners. For Nikon 18-200 VR, it would be a nightmare to use that lens in low light situation even with VR on. Personally, I prefer a constant f/2.8 lens over f/3.5-5.6 VR lenses which will not freeze the subject at all...it just help your hand holding part.
