Newb from FL

Hi all! I am a newb to photography, but it runs in my family. My father was big in to it and I have always been, just not a serious photo taker. I am really looking to learn a lot more about it and going to buy my first real camera soon. I will most likely go with a top of the line Cannon, but not sure which yet. A friend advised a G10. I have heard a lot about the Nikon D90, but probable not good for beginners. What do you all think?
