Newbie to digital

I pretty new to digital photography and I'm sure that my questions are going to sound pretty basic. Well here goes.
How do you identify the file. ie - filename. I have a Nikon D80 and use Photoshop Elements 6. I would like to submit some photos to contests but don't even know how to identify my pictures. Help!

How do you mean 'identify' them? Put a watermark on them?

No- Not put a watermark on them. How do I identify the filename to be able to submit them. For instance - I want to submit photos to PCPhoto for a contest. The page that comes up for you submission asks for three (3) files. Where do I get the info to fill in the needed file names?
