newbie

Total newbie here, I got the $80 Canon 50mm 1.8 lens for my Rebel xt and expermented by taking shots of this stick, ( a cholla cactus). My approach was to use different settings and back grounds and see what happens. I was changing shutter speed and f stop of course along with white balance and iso. My hopes are get an idea of what works so I wont have to take 120 shots to get a few good ones. So am I on the right track?
