I have two big smoke stacks past the fields behind my house and at night the fields cover up the chimneies and the light, lights up the smoke and all you can see is the smoke drifting away in the sky. Well I tried taking a picture of it. But it seem to just be black even on the night filter. I dont have an expensive camera it is just a Sony DSC-S45 I was wondering how I would be able to take the picture.

if you have the ability to control shutter speed and aperture, set the shutter speed as slow as it will go, and the aperture as small of a number as you can (more open to let more light in).

And use a tripod.

If you can, also set the timer, so you won't shake the camera when you take the shot.
