So my wife kinda destroyed my 18-105. She broke the plastic mount and I replaced it but the lens won't TTL with my flash and sometimes it gives me an error saying that it's not connected. I found a nikon 18-70 for $100 and am wondering if it's a good replacement for the 18-105.

IMO, yes. The 18-70 was an anomaly among kit lenses. Sharp, relatively distortion free, very little, if any CA, and a really useful zoom range. I kept mine right up until my last DX body died, and even then I didn't really want to get rid of it. Granted you do lose a little on the long end (which you should complain about to your wife at EVERY opportunity!), but that's about it. It's a reasonably well built, optically excellent lens.

If it's in decent shape, get it and don't look back.

I will never go through the financial burden of getting a new wife again!!!!

The Nikon 18-70 is built like a tank and was a bargain 11 years ago. It was an amazing kit lens for the Nikon D70.

However, put it on a modern 24mp camera and it will start to show its age.

On your D5100 it should still be a good lens.. but in truth, it won't be as good as your old 18-105. If it was me, i'd buy a used 18-105 for $200. Or better yet.. pile on enough guilt to get a 17-50 f/2.8 :)

I can get a Non Vc Tamron for anound 250 to 300 bucks.

The 18-105 was the kit lens on my D90.

I replaced it with a Nikon 17-55 f/2.8.
This lens is why I still have a DX camera (D7100) as well as my D700.

That being said, it can't be had for $100. ;)
The 18-70 is better (IMO) than the 18-55 and FAR better than the 55-200 which are both DX kit lenses as well.
