After falling in love with the 24-120 F4, I quickly
garnished my wages enough to purchase one. Unfortunately, after three uses
(within two months of purchase) I came to the conclusion that unlike the copy I
rented for the Texas Ren Fest a few months prior that my unit was not
functioning correctly. My lens would not achieve focus, even in bright unfilter
by clouds sunlight at 3pm in the afternoon in a parking lot. I sent it in to
Nikon (the California repair facility) and they recieved it on Feb. 3rd then
proceeded to working on it on the 6th. I called the Nikon rep who told me the
lens was indeed malfunctioning. It is written up as a "Cat. B2 - Moderate
Repair: Major Parts Replaced" and not sure beyond the obvious what that means.
In particular, I'm curious as to what parts were replaced. The representative
informed me that my lens should be back to me within 7 to 10 business
days.

Anyone else had to send their lens in for repair for an inability
to focus?

Just an update:

So, I got the lens back today.

This is what they did:

"RPR
Focusing Mechensim"
"RPL Encoder"

Everything else checked out good and they cleaned it... not that it needed it, but it's on the paperwork. Focuses spot on even in low light now!

It's cool that it worked out and that they didn't have it long. I've heard horror stories about them keeping cameras for months.

Maybe because it was a lens and not a camera body...? I don't know. Maybe because it was at the Cali repair facility and not the New York facility? I don't know.
