Hi, so I recently got a SB700 for Christmas! I've been playing around with it attached to the top of the camera. Now I want to play around with it off the camera. How do I do this? Do I need to buy something so the camera can talk to the flash? Or can I use the little sensor on the grip of the camera to communicate back and forth like I do with my remote release?

Read the user's manuals for the D60 and the SB-700.

The D60 does not have CLS commander mode, so you will not have any TTL capablility without accessories. See section D of the SB-700 user's manual.

Nikon's systems communicate optically, but it's infrared light we humans cannot see.

You can also go the wired route or the radio triggering route.

Thank you so much. I looked through the user manuals a couple times and couldn't find anything! I guess I just wasn't looking hard enough.

Just as I figured, looks like I'll be heading to the store sometime soon.
