Nikon D90 Hahnel Battery Grip

I have just bought a Hahnel bettery grip for my Nikon D90. It works fine with the original nicon battery on its own but when I load a new Energizer battery along side the original it won't work. Have loaded the 6AA adapter and that works ok. ANY ONE GOT ADVISE
