Nikon Lens repair?

Anyone know the ends and outs of having a Nikon lens repaired?

I had my local camera shop send a 17-55mm 2.8 off for repairs and just got a repair quote of $430.00. Supposedly it will be like new with a 6 month warranty. Is this rate directly from Nikon or does the Camera shop tack on something and or Is there any room to wiggle on this amount? Is the warranty transferable?

Just curious more than complaining, I figured it would run at least $300.00 before I shipped it.

Not really, I just had the shop ship it to Nikon and they got back with a quote.

if they are doing the middleman stuff, they deserve something.

Ya, I checked out Nikon's site and saw the submit instructions. Next time I'll skip the camera shop and compare the difference.

if it's not warranty work you could also try somewhere like APS, I've heard really good things about them.
