First impressions: it appears to be underexposed - very little detail in the background shadows, but maybe that is the way you wanted it. It is unclear to me where your title "Northern exposure" comes from - care to enlighten us. My 0.02¢ FWIW.

It seems underexposed ...... but please know I am NOT an expert...
 
Also the full size looks a little soft. :)
 
Thanks I took it before sunset and will work on the underexposed part of it.
 
I like the shallow depth of field, at first I thought it would be nice to see someone sitting there but then I saw the bird.
 
It's underexposed for sure. The little bit of sky one can see, doesn't have any indication of a setting sun. Looks more grey. Both the right land left sides of he background are too dark, and therefore have little to no detail. Try re-editing and a slight crop just might help to add interest.
