Old 50mm f/1.8 AF w/ D7000 AF Help.

Well I got this lens from my dad's old N4004, produces some nice and sharp photos. I read that the 50mm is for portraits mainly.

Well it does AF on my D7000, but it hunts for focus all the time even when there is a lot of light available. Got to switch to M to take some shots.
I have a lot of trouble using it in AF but when it does AF produces some nice photos.

Any ideas?

Is it an AF 50 mm f/1.8D lens?

If the lens name does not include the D it doesn't have the electronics needed to convey distance info to the D7000's AF module.

50 mm isn't mainly for portraits. Pros usually use 85 mm to 200 mm for portraits.

50 mm gets recommended for portraits on photography forums, because both Canon and Nikon make fast, inexpensive 50 mm lenses.

Its not the D its the old one. Ah thank you for the info. So that is why it struggles to hunt for focus because its not the D version?

You are saying what exactly? That a lens @ 75mm on a FF would not have the same magnification as a 50mm on a DX? If so you are wrong.

When enlarged to the same print or image size, the photo made from the smaller sensor must be enlarged more. This is done automatically. This is why some people call this a magnification factor.

To get this same crop effect, one would have to use an equivalently longer lens on a 35mm film camera.​
