So i want to upgrade my lens soon (camera is canon xti (400D) (perhaps for christmas) right now i have my kit 18-55mm and 50mm 1.8F. I want the 75-300mm i know that obviously going wit the IS or the L lens would be the best for the long run but it is not in the practical price range.

So here are the three
canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III USM-182$
Tamron 75-300mm f/4-5.6 LD-127$
the sigma kit 28-70mm & 70-300mm DG-209$
OR
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro-192$
The reason i'm thinking about the sigma is at 28mm at f2.8 its faster then my 18-55. and the 70-300mm sigma alone is 192$ so i dont see the big saver.

Any help would be great thanks guys

I've got this one...canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 III USM, it's not bad...it's not great.

From what I've heard, the Sigma & Tamron are fairly similar, just a little cheaper.

My honest opinion would be to save your money for something better.

I would suggest the EF 70-200 f/4 L over the 70-300 IS if image quality is what you are after. Both about the same price. I found the AF and IS on teh 70-300 a bit slow and noisy. I believe it uses one of the earlier versions of IS. Dunno if they updated it or not.

i really wish i could get the L lens or even the IS but both are way out of my price range and wouldn't be able to get one at that price probably for another year.

If that's the case, than get the one with at least the 75-300 with USM motor. The faster AF will b a blessing.

alright thanks soylentgreen after reading reviews it seemed to be a mix feeling if the USM really made any difference but since it is a canon lens i guess itd be better to stick with all the same glass.

I had the Sigma 28-70 but sold it when I got my Tamron 17-50 2.8. It was a nice little lens for the price. Do you have the Canon 50mm 1.8? You might take a look at that lens also.
