Opinions needed on some of the first pics I took after learning how to use my camera!

Whatcha think? I'm still a newbie, but do you see potential in my shots?

[Polyphony]

When you post this many photos you should number them so it's easier to comment. I like 1 and 8 (I am a pianist). Not sure if you were going for that rusted look but it goes well with the image I think.

Black and white doesn't work for the second one in my opinion. 3 and 5 don't do much for me.

For 6 you should have focused on the trunk closest to you, not the branches way up high.

7 looks nice but you should try to get all of the flower in focus. The bottom tips of the petals are not.

Just my opinions.

Polyphony, I love that one and eight are the two most recent ones in the group. I am learning! : D

And it's funny you mentioned the one with the tall tree. The rest of those (other than one and eight) were results of me reading my instruction manual, reading something I wanted to try, and running outside and trying it). That was when I learned about manual auto focus, and I do have one just like that with the branch in focus and the limbs not. I'll post that one some other time. : )

Way too many images upon which to provide specific critique, however a few general thoughts:

-Don't forget to level your images (1, 2)

-Blown skies (5, 6) are NOT attractive; consider the use of polarizing or graduated neutral density filters, and/or different times of day to avoid them.

There's definite potential here, just keep working at it, reading, and posting.

the b&ws don't work for a few reasons - too gray, poor light, little texture, no foreground, subject is not clear. so to improve i suggest chasing good light instead of good subjects because light can make anything interesting, play with narrow depth of field, include foreground objects which have good texture on their surfaces.

in grade school art class we learned that every painting we made had to have a foreground, middleground, and background. i didn't realize it at the time, but it truly is sage advice. many interpretations - not just literal.

You learned your camera, but it just TAKES the picture. you are the one that MAKES the picture. Google photographic techniques like "composition." Not bad for the first shots though. Everyone else gave sound advice otherwise.

By no means am I telling you that you should follow these rules all the time, but they can give you an nice idea of what makes a picture look good. Play around a little bit w/ some of the rules and then make your own judgments on how to make a picture look good.

Thank you all so much!

I do indeed need to stop just focusing on pretty subjects and find neat light. That will be my next lesson to explore.

I also went out today and got a set of filters that goes beyond the plain UV one I have on my lenses. Now my skies will be beautiful!

I forgot to mention that I didn't edit any of these, so maybe I'll play around with them and see if they can improve at all.
