Out of focus

In the past when helping another photog I read one of the d3x00 manuals.
I basically came to the conclusion that the focusing system is nowhere as near as good as a d7x00 and above. They seem very limited, and often make mistakes in focusing on the wrong subject, more often than not it seems.
For accuracy I think you have to go out of Auto mode for focusing points and select them yourself.

I'm going out on a limb here to go another direction with the problem, and say I think it IS a focus issue, not a motion issue. Look at her leg, the one extended out front. The shoe is a little blurry, and her hands are a bit blurred, but the seam in the cloth is sharp as it can be, and you have some texture in the cloth. With camera shake it would not be.

nothing in that image is sharp.

put the little square directly on her face, back up ten feet and put the shutter at 300+ and try again.

I end up with a lot of those, mostly from focus mode in auto and lower shutter speeds.
