P510 problem w zoom

Just gambled $100 on the bay. I am informed that the zoom does not function, and the battery is consumed quickly. Any thoughts as to why would be greatly appreciated. My thought is that a switch is in lock down and killing the battery.

Sound like the camera might have a short circuit.

the battery problem might be solved easily by buying a new batter. the previous owner probably charged it overnight or more than it should be.
