I like to create panoramas of local scenery. These are for the record, rather than for any artistic intent. I was experimenting with the various settings in Photoshop Photomerge to see what would give me the best results. I had decided that the Spherical setting seemed to be the best when I found a suggestion by jsecordphoto to use Microsoft ICE. I have to admit that ICE is quick, easy and gives results as good as the best that Photoshop does.

For the record, the setup was: Sony A55, F/10, 1.320, 28mm. I took six photos sweeping about 80 degrees. I was at one end of the lake, the rest went off to my left.

I show here the ICE version and the PS photomerge versions for comparison. I have not cropped, since it shows what need to be cropped.

I'll always try Microsoft ICE first, because it's way faster, but sometimes the photomerge function in PS is much more accurate- especially when trying to merge a panorama that was taken at night.

If panorama is the point of the exercise try your phone and bypass the stitching process. I have had some great results with my NOTE 3 panorama function.

ICE looks like it does reposition, and then blurs the crap out of it.

Sony has a program the does the stitching in the camera as you take the photo. DSC-HX series all seem to have the feature. Here's one done on a HX20V.

I use ICE for a lot of my panos, when it works- it works great. I've never noticed any blurring or anything. The only time I find it doesn't work as well is blending panoramas at night where there isn't as much detail and points to match.

I'm just going by what I'm seeing posted here. The ICE pano is significantly less detailed than the rest.

I thought that at first, but looking at the full-size image, I could not see any blurring or detail loss.

I have replaced the ICE panorama with a sharpened version. Perhaps it looks a bit better.
