Adobe Photoshop is 20 years old this month.
It is in it's 11th version (CS4) and that doesn't count what transpired before Adobe struck a licensing deal with Thomas Knoll who starting working on a much simpler program just for displaying greyscale images on monochrome monitors, in 1987. He called that program Display.
Thomas's brother worked for Industrial Light and Magic at the time and when he saw the Display program work he encouraged Thomas to make it a full blown image editor.
